Allow people to IM you from your blog - no software required!

As I have posted before, Live Support is something that interests me greatly and I have been constantly on the look out for a good solution.

A new addition to the Windows Live Messenger family of products is the Windows Live Messenger Control for blogs and websites. It allows anybody to contact you directly from your blog and you receive the message in your standard Windows Live Messenger client.

You can dictate if only registered WLM users or annonymous visitors can contact you and there are currently 2 modes of displaying the control. You can opt for a simple 16x16 icon that shows your status or a mini web based messenger client.

I chose the little icon on the right of my blog.

I also allow annonymous people to contact me so click it and say hello ;-)

Chat With Me Live

The good thing about the annonymous chat is that it is protected with a captcha so hinder abuse.

I am planning on using this on Teamwork Project Manager both on the website and inside the actual application to help people get their questions answered if they have any.

To get started, visit the Windows Live Messenger Control website, log in using your Passport account, choose the widget type you want, grab the one line snippet of code that is generated for you and place it on your website or blog. If you would like annonymous people to contact you, you have to click the settings tab and allow this.

Setting IIS Maximum Connections To More Than 10

Every project I am working on, I test against 5 different browsers: Safari, Mozilla, IE7, Opera and IE6 on the same machine. Since Safari has entered the browser lineup, I have been receiving an annoying "HTTP 403.9 - Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected" message.

To solve this issue, do the following:

  1. Download the Administrative Plugin MetaEdit from Microsoft : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B301386
  2. Install Application (Comes with old files so skip these in the installation)
  3. Go to Administrative Tool in Control Panel and launch MetaEdit 2.2
  4. Navigate to the key LM/W3WSVC/MaxConnections
  5. Change the value from 10 to the number of connections you need. I chose : 2000000000 to be extra safe ;-)

This will work on:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 5.1 on Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0, when used with:
    Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0, when used with:
    Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Standard Edition

Bill Gates Steps Down...

Microsoft Corp. announced late Thursday (15th June) that Bill Gates was immediately handing over his role as chief software architect to Chief Technology Officer Ray Ozzie and will transition out of his day-to-day role at the world's largest software company over the next two years.

Gates, Microsoft's chairman, said he made the decision to give up his daily involvement with the company he co-founded in order to devote more of his time to global health and education work through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

During a conference call to discuss his plans, Gates emphasized that he wasn't retiring but rather "reordering" his priorities.

The Redmond based company said Gates would make the transition over two years in order to ensure a "smooth and orderly" transfer of his responsibilities.

After 2008, Gates will continue to serve as chairman and an adviser on key development projects.

Ozzie will immediately take on Gates' title of chief software architect and begin working with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight.
